Mid-Coast Trolley

The San Diego region’s biggest investment in public transportation to-date is set to open in fall 2021. The 11-mile extension of the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley will offer a one-seat ride from the U.S.-Mexico border to the major education and job center of University City.

Over the next decade, population along the I-5 corridor (where the Trolley extension runs) is expected to grow by 19%, and job growth in the UTC area is expected to grow by 12%. When open, the Mid-Coast Trolley extension is expected to help carry an additional 20,000 trips a weekday, providing a much-needed mobility option for the area.

The extension will have nine new stations between the Old Town Transit Center and UTC shopping center. Five of these stations will have free Park & Ride lots for commuters looking to try a multimodal commute. You can view simulations of each station here.

The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) is the lead agency on the project’s construction. For additional information on construction and project updates, and to subscriber to project communications, visit its website.
