Iris Rapid

In late 2022, MTS will reach a new milestone when it launches the first electric Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service in the region—the Iris Rapid. The new route will operate in San Diego’s South County, stretching from the Otay Mesa border to Imperial Beach, with a connection to the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley at Iris Avenue. It will represent another service addition to an area with fast-growing transit demand, joining other popular routes such as the 905 and 950 Express.

Iris Rapid—or Rapid 925—will add to the riding experience of the MTS Rapid brand that passengers have come to know by offering clean, quiet and all-electric rides, on board 60-ft articulated buses. The new service will feature amenities such as large shaded shelters, digital displays with next-arrival information and bus-only lanes. With service anticipated every 7.5 minutes, it will provide passengers with fast, frequent and more direct trips to jobs, shopping centers and the beach.

Public outreach for the route’s design was conducted in the communities of San Ysidro, Nestor, Otay Mesa and Imperial Beach during the fall/winter of 2019. The route design contract was awarded to Dokken Engineering in July 2020, and construction is scheduled to begin in 2021. Service on the new Rapid route is expected to begin at the end of 2022.
