The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) operates three light rail lines and more than 90 bus routes, providing more than 86 million annual passenger trips, in central, southern and eastern San Diego County.
The agency and its contractors currently employ more than 2,500 people in downtown San Diego, El Cajon, Chula Vista and Kearny Mesa.
MTS has a long history of innovation in public transit, most notably for being the first modern light rail system in the country.
Since launching the all-electric Trolley in 1981, MTS has continued to invest in operating one of the cleanest fleets in the United States, as well as new technology for its system, including:
- 100% use of renewable biogas for bus fleet
- Introduced near-zero emission engines for bus fleet
- Electric bus pilot (fall 2019)
- Low-floor vehicles throughout Trolley system
